'DIGITAL (DRM) SSTV' IS NOT A "DIGITAL" VERSION OF CONVENTIONAL SLOW SCAN TV (SSTV). IT'S A SPECIAL DIGITAL MODE DESIGNED FOR HIGH ACCURACY FILE TRANSFER OF IMAGES, AUDIO, AND DATA . THE PROPER TECHNICAL NAME IS ACTUALLY "DRM" (DIGITAL RADIO MONDIALE). 'MONDIALE' IS FRENCH FOR 'WORLDWIDE'. IT IS COMMONLY KNOWN FOR ITS USE IN THE SHORTWAVE BROADCAST INDUSTRY.
QUALITY OF A DRM IMAGE TRANSMITTED AND RECEIVED BY DIGITAL DRM SSTV SOFTWARE EXCEEDS THE CAPABILITIES OF ANALOG SSTV. DISTORTION-FREE IMAGES ARE RECEIVED EXACTLY AS SENT. THE CLARITY OF THE RECIVED IMAGE APPEARS AS AN EXACT REPRODUCTION OF THE ORIGINAL.
TO ACCOMPLISH THIS, UNLIKE CONVENTIONAL NARROWBAND SSTV, DRM 'DIGITAL SSTV' UTILIZES POLYNOMIAL CODES THAT ENABLE "RS" (REED-SOLOMON) ERROR CORRECTION.
IN SIMILARITY, DIGITAL DRM AND ANALOG SSTV REQUIRE DATA TO PASS THROUGH A SOUND CARD FOR SOFTWARE IMAGE PROCESSING, HENCE THEY USE THE SAME SOUND CARD - COMPUTER - RIG INTERFACE AND SETTINGS COMMONLY USED FOR ANALOG SSTV, PSK, AND OTHER POPULAR DIGITAL MODES.

IF YOU ARE ALREADY SET UP FOR DIGITAL MODES -ESPECIALLY ANALOG SSTV- GRADUATION TO DRM DIGITAL SSTV SHOULD BE STRAIGHTFORWARD. THE PROGRAM TO USE IS EASY PAL BY ERIK SUNDSRUP , VK4AES.
THE RECOMMENDED SETUP USES SOUND CARD AND COM PORT SETTINGS SIMILAR TO THOSE ALREADY USED FOR OTHER DIGITAL MODES AND ANALOG SSTV SOFTWARE.
"RS CHECKBOX SETTINGS" ON THE LEFT SIDE OF EASY PAL CONTROL PANEL - (FOR REED-SOLOMON ERROR CORRECTION) USE RS-1 OR RS-2 (MOST OF THE TIME) FOR AVERAGE CONDITIONS, RS-3 or 4 FOR HEAVY QRM.
SOMETIMES PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE, ESPECIALLY FOR DIGITAL DRM SSTV RECEPTION ! ! THESE FANTASTIC IMAGES ARE WELL WORTH THE OCCASIONAL EXTRA EFFORT.
BAND CONDITIONS SHOULD BE FAVORABLE AND SIGNAL RECEPTION RELATIVELY FREE OF QSB AND QRM. RECEIVED SIGNALS SHOULD SHOW AVERAGE TO STRONG S-METER
READINGS. SSB VOICE CONTACT IN QSO IS USUALLY MADE BEFORE IMAGE EXCHANGES.
TO DISPLAY AN IMAGE, A CRITICAL NUMBER OF DATA "SEGMENT" BITS MUST BE RECEIVED. DUPLICATE "SEGMENTS" ARE SENT IN A TRANSMISSION. THE 'RS' SETTING (1-4) USED BY
A TRANSMITTING STATION DICTATES HOW MANY REDUNDANT "SEGMENTS" WILL BE SENT.
IF NOT ENOUGH "SEGMENTS" ARE RECEIVED, THE ENTIRE IMAGE MAY "FAIL TO DECODE" - AND NO IMAGE WILL BE SEEN. (CAUSES : WEAK SIGNAL, QSB, QRM )
TO CORRECT, A "BSR" (BAD "SEGMENT" REQUEST) IS PREPARED BY THE RECEIVING SOFTWARE TO BE SENT BACK TO SENDER. THE SENDER'S SOFTWARE THEN OFFERS TO RE-TRANSMIT A "FIX" CONTAINING REQUESTED MISSING (BSR) "SEGMENTS" NEEDED BY THE RECEIVING STATION TO COMPLETE AND DISPLAY THE IMAGE.
WITH AN INTERNET CONNECTION, EASY PAL WILL INFORM OTHER USERS THAT YOUR STATION IS 'ACTIVE'. IT WILL ALSO AUTOMATICALLLY UPLOAD YOUR RECEIVED PICTURES FOR OTHERS TO SEE, IF THAT SETTING IS ENABLED. A QSL CAN BE SENT. OTHER ACCESSORY SOFTWARE (SEE BELOW) ENHANCES THE EXPERIENCE.
